Happy 100th Anniversary, Boy Scouts of America!
100 years of Scouting in the United States is being celebrated today, February 8, 2010. Scouts today are helping in Haiti's relief efforts, participating in community service projects, and preparing the next generation of youth for the changing world.

Scout Days at Citi Field Prove a Major League Hit!
The Greater New York Councils held three Scout Days this summer at the Mets' new stadium, Citi Field, at which we promoted Scouting programs to youth and encouraged families to sign their sons up for Scouting.
Scouts in attendance performed in the opening ceremony and got to meet some of their major league heroes on the Mets. While select Scouts got to stand in player positions on the field and welcome the team as they took the field, more than 1,000 Scouts and families were able to stand in the outfield at the games and show their pride and participation in Scouting in New York City. Both the Scouts and Mets are excited to partner together to teach youth about teamwork and healthy living.
In 2010, the Boy Scouts of America will partner with Major League Baseball nationwide in the BSA's 100th Anniversary celebrations, with "Pitch for Scouting" promotions taking place at major and minor league ballfields around the country. From the first pitch to the seventh inning stretch to everywhere in between, Scouts will be on the field and involved in the sport, providing a fun and highly visible platform for Scouting and its centennial.

The 475-page paperback features nostalgic illustrations from the previous 11 editions alongside references to emerging technology and expanded online information.
Touted by some Scouts as the ultimate adventure manual, the 12th edition Handbook teaches preparedness and responsibility in both traditional and new ways: think compass and GPS devices, tying a knot as well as a necktie, and first aid and Internet safety. For the first time, the printed Handbook is accompanied by an online site, www.bsahandbook.org, which contains expanded content and illustrations on handbook topics and advancement requirements.

We are partnering with www.TripTithe.com, which will donate the agent's commission to the Greater New York Councils. Congratulations to New Eagle Scout Robert Rubano, 47 Years Young
Robert Rubano, Scoutmaster of Troop 24 in New Dorp, Staten Island, finally earned the Eagle Scout rank-- almost 30 years past his 18th birthday, the cut-off for such an achievement.
Rubano completed every requirement prior to his 18th birthday, as part of Troop 20 in Brooklyn, but a mix-up precluded him from completing his Board of Review. After presting his case to the National Boy Scouts of America and the Greater New York Councils, he finally appeared before a GNYC Advancement Committee and was approved both locally and by the National BSA.
His story was featured in this piece from the Staten Island Advance. Rubano says, "I know this pleases my dad, but I'm still not going to medical school."

We are proud to share an inspiring story from the Staten Island Advance about Staten Island Scouts presenting a 32-foot American flag that was restored after being badly damaged at the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.
The unveiling took place at the Postcards Memorial, the 9/11 tribute located adjacent to the Richmond County Bank Ballpark, and the flag was then presented during the singing of the national anthem at a baseball game between the Staten Island Yankees and Brooklyn Cyclones on Sunday, July 26th.
A Day in the Life... of Scout Camp
Greetings from Ten Mile River! Please take a moment to get a glimpse into a typical Wednesday at Ten Mile River Scout Reservation's Camps Aquehonga and Keowa, with moments captured this July 22nd.
We caught up with New York City boys skillfully making handicrafts, building bridges, bravely scaling the COPE course, cooling off in the pool, attending outdoor worship services, getting muddy on bikes, boating, fishing, and more. It's clear that they are learning many valuable life skills...while having even more fun!
Please take a moment to view our photo album of just one of many idyllic summer camp days that will remain in a child's memory forever!

Law Enforcement Explorers Work the City Beat in "All Day New York"
More than 300 young men and women in the Greater New York Councils' Law Enforcement Exploring program are spending this June 29th touring the city with various law enforcement agency officials, predominately those of the NYPD, in siren-flashing patrol cars to visit locations where young adults in this highly-regarded program will learn about law enforcement careers.
This year's theme of the annual All Day New York is "Law Enforcement and the Media", and Explorers are promoting the day's activities on both the CBS Early Show and ABC's Good Morning America. Explorers are also touring movie studios and engaging in a panel discussion at One Police Plaza with distinguished members of law enforcment and the media, including Domenico Montanaro of NBC News.
Explorers also ran a successful city-wide community service project this weekend, Operation Safe Child, in conjunction with the Explorer Officers' Association. This imporant project resulted in more than 400 of our city's families being provided a Safe Child Card, with a current photograph, biographical information and fingerprints, so that in the unfortunate case of a child's disappearance, law enforcement officials have vital information to expedite an investigation and bring the child home safely.
Congratulations to both Explorers and advisors for these accomplishments. More information can be found at www.nyexploring.org.
Enterprise Rent-A-Car Volunteers Do A Good Turn
20 Enterprise Rent-A-Car employees turned out for a work day at Alpine Scout Camp on June 19th, where they spent the day painting the interior of the pool shower house, in preparation for hundreds of children this summer.
The Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation funded this and another project to take place with additional Enterprise volunteers on July 11th at William H. Pouch Scout Camp, where the group will install split rail fencing at the Lake Ohrbach waterfront entrance.
We applaud the dedicated efforts of Enterprise Rent-A-Car and its employees to help improve facilities for the youth of our community. Previous generous funding constructed the Enterprise Rent-A-Car COPE and teambuilding courses at Alpine Scout Camp.

GNYC Eagle Scout Accomplishes Rare Feat of Earning All 121 Merit Badges
Eagle Scout Shawn Goldsmith has done what few Scouts have ever done, earning every Merit Badge offered by the Boy Scouts of America, all to fulfill a pledge made to his dying grandmother.
To achieve the elite rank of Eagle Scout, a young man must earn 21 merit badges, and each one achieved requires time, hard work and proven skill mastery. Earning 121 merit badges is an almost unheard-of feat that requires an overwhelming commitment of time and effort to learning life skills such as lifesaving, orienteering, auto mechanics, medicine, cooking, oceanography, athletics, environmental science, and over one hundred other areas of study.
Everyone at the Greater New York Councils is proud of you, Shawn!
