Law Enforcement Explorers Work the City Beat in "All Day New York"

More than 300 young men and women in the Greater New York Councils' Law Enforcement Exploring program are spending this June 29th touring the city with various law enforcement agency officials, predominately those of the NYPD, in siren-flashing patrol cars to visit locations where young adults in this highly-regarded program will learn about law enforcement careers.

This year's theme of the annual All Day New York is "Law Enforcement and the Media", and Explorers are promoting the day's activities on both the CBS Early Show and ABC's Good Morning America.  Explorers are also touring movie studios and engaging in a panel discussion at One Police Plaza with distinguished members of law enforcment and the media, including Domenico Montanaro of NBC News.

Explorers also ran a successful city-wide community service project this weekend, Operation Safe Child, in conjunction with the Explorer Officers' Association. This imporant project resulted in more than 400 of our city's families being provided a Safe Child Card, with a current photograph, biographical information and fingerprints, so that in the unfortunate case of a child's disappearance, law enforcement officials have vital information to expedite an investigation and bring the child home safely.

Congratulations to both Explorers and advisors for these accomplishments.  More information can be found at www.nyexploring.org.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car Volunteers Do A Good Turn

20 Enterprise Rent-A-Car employees turned out for a work day at Alpine Scout Camp on June 19th, where they spent the day painting the interior of the pool shower house, in preparation for hundreds of children this summer.

The Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation funded this and another project to take place with additional Enterprise volunteers on July 11th at William H. Pouch Scout Camp, where the group will install split rail fencing at the Lake Ohrbach waterfront entrance.

We applaud the dedicated efforts of Enterprise Rent-A-Car and its employees to help improve facilities for the youth of our community.   Previous generous funding constructed the Enterprise Rent-A-Car COPE and teambuilding courses at Alpine Scout Camp.

Mayor Bloomberg Credits Scout Training for Quick Thinking

New York City's Mayor Michael Bloomberg credits his background as a Boy Scout for his quick thinking when someone passed out during a press conference recently. He used the skills he learned to earn the First Aid merit badge to assist the ill college student. "I'm happy for my Boy Scout training," he said.

"759: Boy Scouts of Harlem" Documentary World Premiere Shines a Light on GNYC Scouts

A heartwarming independent documentary film, "759: Boy Scouts of Harlem", premiered this past Saturday at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem.  Scouts and leaders from Harlem's Troop 759 emerged from their limo as celebrities on the red carpet to see the true story of their troop hit the big screen.

In the film, Keith Dozier, left, spends his first summer at Ten Mile River's Camp Keowa and has many poignant, and funny, moments along the way.  The film highlights the bond of the troop and their dedicated leaders, including Keith's grandmother, Ms. Ann, and Okpoti Sowah, a devoted decades-long Scout leader.  For more information and photos, please click here. More information on the film can be found at www.harlemscouts.com.

GNYC Eagle Scout Accomplishes Rare Feat of Earning All 121 Merit Badges

Eagle Scout Shawn Goldsmith has done what few Scouts have ever done, earning every Merit Badge offered by the Boy Scouts of America, all to fulfill a pledge made to his dying grandmother.

To achieve the elite rank of Eagle Scout, a young man must earn 21 merit badges, and each one achieved requires time, hard work and proven skill mastery. Earning 121 merit badges is an almost unheard-of feat that requires an overwhelming commitment of time and effort to learning life skills such as lifesaving, orienteering, auto mechanics, medicine, cooking, oceanography, athletics, environmental science, and over one hundred other areas of study.

To read the full story, please click here.

Everyone at the Greater New York Councils is proud of you, Shawn!
