Colombian Scouts Find International Fellowship at Ten Mile River on Historic Trip

More than 60 Scouts from Colombia are participating in a two-week summer camp program at Ten Mile River Scout Reservation in Narrowsburg, NY in a first-time international collaboration between the the United States and Colombia.

Boys and girls of Unit 73 Nabusimake of Bogota and members of the Colombian Scout Association had to achieve high academic marks and pass rigorous tests in Scout Skills in order to qualify for this special U.S. Scouting experience.  They also raised their own funds to pay for the trip.

Friendships are being made as the Colombian Scouts eat, sing, and participate in activities alongside American Scouts.  Some of the Scouts were overjoyed that the tents at camp had mattresses and they are also impressed with the dining hall meals.  It is an education for our Scouts as well to see how appreciative other children are of the camp accommodations and traditions.

Many of the campers have never been to the United States or ever been on an airplane before this trip. A Canadian troop is coming down to TMR to meet the South American Scouts as well.  We are so grateful to have these boys and girls enjoying our camp. They are already planning their fundraising to come back next summer.  Come back soon!

Queens Scout Saves Life

The life skills training that Daniel Fould received in the Scouts turned out to be lifesaving skills, as he saved his father's life on a hunting trip last November.

The 17-year-old Eagle Scout from Troop 18 in College Point didn't always think Scouting was "cool," but through using his training and by living the "Be Prepared" motto, he became a hero.

Daniel stuck with Scouting from elementary school through high school and was awarded one of only 124 Medal of Merit awards bestowed by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America last year.

He also received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Rep. Joseph Crowley, a City Council citation from Councilman John Liu, and several other awards.
